Obituary of Margaret Adams Griffin
Kewanee – Margaret Adams Griffin, 95, of the Courtyard Village, Kewanee, died at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Kewanee Care Center after a brief illness.
Margaret was born on August 26, 1914, in Moline, the daughter of Franklin and Rena Sharp Catton. She married Earl Wayne Griffin on October 21, 1933. He preceded her in death in May 2001.
Survivors include her children, Shirley (John) Wallis of Prophetstown, Donald (Pat) Griffin of New Bern, NC, and Dianne Boggs of Delavan; six grandchildren, John L. Wallis, Teresa Ludlow, Melina Penta, Aaron Griffin, Julie Gathmann, and RaeAnn Ronk; half-brother, Donald Catton; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, a son-in-law, and a great-grandchild.
Margaret graduated from Victoria High School in 1932, and lived most of her adult life in and around Toulon, before moving to Kewanee in 2002. She worked as a telephone operator for General Telephone and later Kraft Foods. She operated the Schackateria Restaurant in Toulon for several years. For many years Margaret was a leader of the Stark County Health & Nutrition Program and was one of the founders of the Food Pantry in Stark County.
Margaret served as a board member on the Central Illinois Agency on Aging and on the Legislative Forum in Springfield. She also was Toulon Township Assessor for 28 years. She was chairman of Stark County Homemakers Extension Service and the President of the Toulon Women’s Club. Margaret was a member of the Toulon United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sharing her many craft and quilting projects with her friends and family.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at DeBolt-Kidd Funeral Home, Toulon. Rev. Paul Wier will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior. Burial will be in Toulon Cemetery.
